Jaylib (J Dilla & Madlib) – “Raw Shit” (2003)
Nothing touches ‘Donuts‘ for me. But even though I’m not a huge Madlib fan, I’ve come around to the “Jaylib” collaborations between he and Dilla. This track has a little of the feeling of both, succinctly capturing the chopped playfulness of J Dilla, and bounces along confidently with a catchy vocal hook (featuring Talib Kweli sounding as good as I’ve heard him) and a great organ sample. [J Dilla is featured here and here in very different contexts at Musicophilia.]
one of the few rap songs i ever liked. bouncy & fun, rather smooth. i have no clue but i suppose that is typical for west-coast hip-hop, no? any reason why the song is cut off in the middle?
Hmm–I’ll have to check on it being cut off–hadn’t noticed that.
J Dilla is from Detroit, Madlib is from Los Angeles–this track sounds like the production was done more by Madlib, but unfortunately I’d say neither artist is especially typical of anything–they’re influential, but pretty unique figures. You should definitely check out J Dilla’s ‘Donuts’ album–instrumental, bursting with creativity. He has a very individual style, very timeless and unashamedly “raw”–making rough-cut-edges into an aesthetic signature, and he’s a deep, deep crate-digger, uses fantastic source material.
